Looking for more great webcomics like Sombulus? Here are a few from my reading list that I currently follow and recommend!
Immaterial is a brand new comic series by Sarah Ellerton. Sarah was a huge inspiration for me as I was planning Sombulus, and her latest comic about unwitting world-hoppers falling face-first into weird places is (predicatably) right up my alley.
What it Takes by Kez follows a rough jaded survivor of the post-apocalypse through a bloody path of broken alliances to find her way back to her boyfriend.
I've been a fan for years, and Kez posted the final page of the main story and the end was SO GOOD and SO TENSE.
The Stoop-Gallants by MJ Alexander and WW Rose follows a rag-tag group of peasants floundering their way through relationships, amateur magic, and dismantling unfair structures of power.
Wychwood by Varethane is about a looming alien threat that destroyed the world and the mysterious organization picking up the pieces. Sometimes those pieces are people with connections to the magical networks the aliens left behind. Sometimes they don't like being picked up. And sometimes the threat is closer than anyone thinks...
Phantomarine by Claire is a spooky seafaring comic about a ghostly princess's bargain for her life with a trickster god, and a boy who can speak with ghosts trying to find his mother after she was abducted under mysterious circumstances. Maybe their quests are interconnected! Maybe there's more to gods and ghosts than we think! The characters and worldbuilding are lots of fun and I really recommend it if you like Sombulus!
Spare Keys for Strange Doors by Lucy Lyall is an urban fantasy episodic mystery webcomic, which contrasts ordinary adult life with the realm of the supernatural in quirky and often comedic ways, as two specialists offer their magical problem-solving services to their ordinary modern-day town. The series is wrapping up for now, but the adventures are well worth a read!
Soul to Call by Rommie is a post-apocalyptic story. An aloof foul-mouthed courier meets a boy with bloodmancy powers in her quest to survive the horrors that lurk in her shattered world and reunite with her father. Very graphic but very good!
The Sea In You by Jessi Sheron is about a teenage girl named Corinth who meets a curious mermaid named Skylla. Though Skylla's monsterous appearance and deadly siren voice seem dangerous at first, the two find common ground and unexpected joy in learning from one another.
The Wyrm Turns is Helen Greetham's new series about a determined knight named Pem who finds herself under the employ of Pphnarg, a pompously ridiculous prince who's half dragon, half... accountant?! Helen's humor is delightful and I've loved watching Pphnarg develop. Do give her comic a read, it's a wonderful treat!
O Sarilho by Shizamura takes place in a war-torn Roman-inspired future where augurs interface with computers and a crash-landed alien draws attention from all sides. The mix of styles, glitchpunk graphics mixed with classical architexture, and compelling characters are so unique and inspiring.
Retroblade by Freya is a wild time-travelling ride as the last man on Earth travels back in time to assemble a ragtag group from various eras to save humanity. It recently came back from hiatus and I'm so excited!
Monster Lands by Jamie follows the mellow warrior Othera, the opportunistic rogue Marcus, and the idealistic paladin Nadil through the perils and plots of comically evil sorcerer and bizarre monsters of all kinds. I love all the fun characters so much in this one!
Ingress Adventuring Company by Kay follows a ridiculous wizard trying to get his old adventuring party back together to solve a resurfacing threat from his past. Creepy monsters mixed with very fun characters!
Jack Beloved by Max and David is about a young man named Sam, determined to prove himself in a kingdom driven by war against the creatures of the night. But his gentle soul and growing friendship with a magical demon named Wick makes him question where his place truly is.
Now Recharging by Maiji is a slice of life about a cute android named Emmie, whose childlike wonder about the nature of humanity makes even the most mundane tasks seem like an adventure!
Sleepless Domain by Mary Cagle is a story about a world where magical girls have become celebrities, fighting invading creatures of darkness while the city sleeps. But after the appearance of a mysterious new monster and a tragic accident, processing loss and grief and building a support system might be the greatest fight of all.
Earth in a Pocket is a completed comic by Helen Greetham about an anthropologist who becomes stranded on a deserted planet with curious mushroom-like aliens. As she awaits rescue, she teaches her alien companions about the interesection of history and humanity. The whole thing is beautiful, heart-warming fun.
